Later, however, it was outclassed by Tyre, but Phoenicians generally continued to be known as Sidonians (1 Kings 5:6 (5:1-7), 16:31), as if in recollection of Sidon's ancient preeminence. In Unger's Bible Dictionary page 1188 in the entry Zidonians he writes that some of the Sidonians from Sidon founded the city of Tyre as a colony initially but in very ancient times as follows: "Zidon (Sidon) claimed to be the mother city of which Tyre was a colony: and correctly, though the weight of ancient authority is pretty evenly divided. Zidon, in Genesis 49:13, is the firstborn of Canaan. Tyre first appears in the Bible at the time of the invasion of Palestine by the Israelites (Joshua 19:29). Both cities were of great antiquity." Also in Unger's Bible Dictionary at the map at the end of the book with title Canaan Before the Conquest the coastal region of Lebanon that starts south of Tyre to well north of Sidon is labeled both Phoenicians and Sidonians indicating that Tyre and its inhabitants were Sidonians and Canaanites from Ham. The Phoenicians or Sidonians also included the city of Byblos or in Hebrew Gebal as described in Unger's Bible Dictionary under the entry Gebal as follows: "A very ancient Phoenician trading city on the Mediterranean, presently Gebeil on the Mediterranean twenty-five miles North of Beirut (Joshua 13:5, 1 Kings 5:18 Revised Standard Version).
